Position Summary 

The Group Fitness Director is responsible for the operations and supervision of the following departments: Group Fitness, Spinning, and Specialty Programming. This Individual has the responsibility of being responsive to members and being a resource for members and staff needs regarding programs and classes while in the center's facilities. 

Essential Functions 

  • Design, delivery and management of cutting edge group fitness programs that excite and encourage members to participate.
  • Provide supervision, administrative, clerical, and operational management of the support for the Group Fitness and Spinning departments.
  • Supervise Group Exercise Instructors
    • Deliver orientation, staff training and performance reviews.
    • Informally audit classes frequently
    • Resolve employee issues as they arise and in accordance with Company policy.
  • Communicate with Instructors on a weekly basis to make sure all classes are covered for time off and injuries, and help instructors find last minute instructors when needed - add all substitutions into the appropriate google calendars, or other appropriate platforms.
  • Assist in processing program registrations and payments
  • Assist with creating and maintaining new/updated group exercise staff bios
  • Create and turn in monthly E-Blast information pertaining to new and ongoing programs to your Supervisor by deadline.
  • Coordinate all workshops that will promote the department and club to the public, new members and instructors. A minimum of one per fiscal year is required for group fitness; additional workshops in Mind Body & other specialty programming are also required.
  • Attend industry workshops to gain experience on the latest trends.
  • Record monthly highlight, low light and staff acknowledgement for areas of supervision.
  • Attract and retain members by working with your supervisor to keep the schedules evolving with current trends in the industry by adding new classes and instructors that will attract new and current members.
  • Evaluate, coach, and mentor instructors on a consistent basis as needed; this includes, but is not limited to: observing & participating in classes regularly to ensure quality control, sharing appropriate member/staff feedback in a constructive manner, and suggesting music or routine changes as appropriate.
  • Produces monthly class schedule and descriptions
  • Fills in as instructor for last-minute absences by staff (should be rare)
  • Teaches classes each week to establish and maintain credibility with members and staff
  • Coordinates class offerings, schedules, and staffing according to national standards
  • Recruits, completes practical interview, hires, trains, and supervises all instructors for group fitness and specialty programs.
  • Other duties as assigned by management and as business dictates.

Other Functions: 

  • Attend Sports & Wellness department trainings & meetings
  • Promote center services and programs
  • Assist with keeping the center well stocked and clean

Specific Skills: 

  • Customer service oriented
  • Ability to maintain the confidentiality of all information received and processed.
  • Exhibit professionalism, self-motivation, and ability to work independently
  • Rounded administrative skills including email, written/oral communications.
  • Ability to pay close attention to detail and be-able-to work with confidential information
  • Excellent organizational skills, includes demonstrated work experience with group fitness related platforms
  • Ability to: handle responsibility, follow-through, multi-task, and be reliable & responsive


  • Nationally Recognized Spinning certification
  • Nationally Recognized Group Fitness certification
  • Ability to teach a variety of Group Fitness formats

Specialized knowledge, licenses, etc.: 

  • CPR/AED certified


Minimum of 2 years of supervisory experience as well as 3 years of teaching experience
